When the Umbrella Corporation's top secret underground genetic research facility experiences a deadly viral outbreak, its defense mechanism, the Red Queen, seals the entire facility to contain the leak....killing all the trapped employees. No-nonsense and hard as nails, Rain Ocampo arrives with her fellow commando team to investigate the incident and shut down the Red Queen. The team soon discovers, however, that the workers are not really dead. They are now the ravenous, zombie-like undead, and they are prowling the hive looking to feed. One bite or scratch from a zombie causes infection and eventual transformation into one of them. To access the Red Queen, the team must pass through a series of increasingly horrifying obstacles in the maze-like hive. Alice soon discovers the zombies are the ghastly result of Umbrella’s latest project gone awry, the T-virus. After Rain is bitten several times, she struggles to hold on as they make their way back above ground. She loses this battle however and turns into a zombie as they ride the train back to the surface. Matt, one of their allies, is force to shoot her in order to save he and Alice, who are then taken by Umbrella corporation after they escape the hive.
