In eighteenth century Romania, Rayne, a young dhampir (half-human, half-vampire), prone to fits of blind blood rage but saddled with a compunction for humans, strives to avenge her mother’s rape and murder by her father, Kagan, King of the Vampires. Along the way she meets members of the Brimstone Society. Katarin is the highly skilled and fearless protector of the society, who is highly cautious and concerned by Rayne's arrival into the society. When Kagan's hoards eventually arrive at the society's headquarters, Katarin betrays Brimstone in a last ditch effort to survive, by obtaining what Kagan is after herself. She and Rayne engage in an underwater battle but Rayne ultimately wins by snapping her neck, then feeding off of her.
