At a recent
event for DRIV3R, we had a chance to sit down with a couple of the celebrities
who are providing voices for the game. One of the stars we talked to was Michelle
Rodriguez, known for her roles in the films Girlfight, The Fast and the Furious
and Resident Evil, amongst many others.
Michelle
provides the voice for Calita in DRIV3R, which should hit Xbox, PS2 and PC in
a few months. The full video interview is available on IGN Insider where you
can see the lovely Michelle answer the questions and get all misty eyed about
the video games she grew up with. Not an Insider? Don't want to download a big
video file? Have no fear, the whole transcribed interview is right here.
IGNPS2: You've
done voice-acting in games before, right?
One game
before. True Crime [Streets of L.A.].
IGNPS2: Were
you ad-libbing a lot for this role?
Well,
you listen to the voices that have already been recorded. You look at a rough
version of the scenario and basically no backgrounds, just the characters. Very
raw. And you get to see how they move and how they move their lips and you adapt.
IGNPS2: You
were bringing your own personal style to this character. Was there any other
character that you were basing yourself on?
No. [laughs]
Do you think
any of your own movies will be made into video games in the future? Like Girlfight?
You know,
it's like, people don't understand. Video games are like a big, giant f***ing
commercial. You can create an amazing world, make your video game first, come
out with the movie afterwards, and you've got your own franchise. It's pathetic.
It's pretty sick. As long as the idea and the core of what you're coming up
with is good, you're on ... people don't understand. It's bigger than Hollywood.
They're doofuses, but whatever.
You play games
yourself?
Yeah,
I do.
So what have
you been playing lately?
SOCOM.
I'm stuck on Heavy Metal Gear Solid.
Do you play
SOCOM II?
I play
SOCOM one. That's the one I bought.
Do you ever
get online?
No. I don't go. Dude, it's like I barely have time to use the bathroom nowadays.
So whenever I do get a chance it's like Soul Blade and, you know, my little
Tekken fighting game and my SOCOM, my Rainbow, you know what I mean?
Rainbow Six
3?
Yeah,
I'm stuck on the games that I'm used to, you know? Why stop playin' em?
You should try
getting online, though. Rainbow Six 3 has a huge following in our office.
You sit
there with these techie geeks who play all the time and they just love nailing
you and it's annoying because if I had the time that you do to play, believe
me. It'd be on. If I don't have any comp and I don't have anything to bring
to the table why go online with a bunch of techie guys who are on it? I see
no point.
Did you play
a lot when you were a kid. Did you have any brothers that you played against?
Honey,
since Atari and Colecovision, I've been kickin' it. Sega, Sega Genesis. Even
those little boxes that you put slides in. It was a pad and a little ball and
it was like tennis and basketball [laughs]. All you had to do was change the
little slide. I forget the name of it, but I used to play it when I was a kid.
So what are
some of your all-time favorites?
All-time
favorite for Atari was Pole Position. There was this one game where you got
to go on a swing...
Pitfall?
Pitfall!
I loved Pitfall. And then for Sega Genesis it was Space Harrier. And then Nintendo
came out and I was hooked on Mario Bros., that corny stuff. I didn't like Zelda
too much. I don't know why. And then Street Fighter Super Nintendo came out
and I was just on that. Then Tekken for PlayStation. Virtua Fighter and stuff
like that. I love my video games.
So I see a theme
here. A lot of fighting going on.
Oh yeah.
Sonic the Hedgehog [laughs].
All right, I
have one last question for you. If there was a game featuring you as a main
character, what would it be?
[laughs]
Something incredibly kick-ass, I'll tell you that much. Something with a mixture
of Contra with the dual... that ability to play two characters at one time where
you get to fight together. Kind of like Double Dragon, but with Mortal Kombat
graphics where you have actual real characters, motion characters with real
faces and real bodies. Like human beings. They'd get to fight and kick butt.
